Environmental Team

The Environmental Team coordinates the growing of a vegetable garden. Each week during the growing season, vegetables are harvested and delivered to the food bank.

The Earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,

The world, and all who live in it.

Psalm 24:1

Background

As a result of an interest in caring for the Earth and all who live in it, St. Andrew’s formed an Environmental Team in 2015.  Below is a snapshot of the work in which the team is engaged.

Vision

The St. Andrew’s Church community believes that we should demonstrate our responsibility to be faithful servants of the Lord and His creation.

Mission

The St. Andrew’s Church community is committed to loving creation and humanity by performing actions that respect, protect and remediate the environment.

Environmental Handbook

An Environmental Ethics and Practices Handbook was developed in which the rationale for the existence of an Environmental Team is explained.  Many actions which St. Andrew’s and other community members are encouraged to follow to preserve the environment are also included in the handbook.

Garden Mission

Everyone is welcome to come to St. Andrew’s garden to fellowship or to help to maintain the garden on Wednesday mornings beginning at 9:00 a.m. When available, fresh vegetables are harvested at this time and taken to the food bank.

The Environmental Team is actively involved in growing vegetables and pollinator gardens.  These teaching gardens are designed to support members of our community interested in learning about growing plants for beauty & for food.

The beautiful pollinator gardens that showcase some of our native perennial plants invite people into this peaceful haven to relax and enjoy the surroundings.  They also serve to provide food & refuge for a vast number of bees, butterflies and other insects.

The vegetable gardens supply food to people in the Tweed community.  Some folks visit the garden to harvest a few fresh vegetables for their dinner and weekly deliveries are made to the local food bank.

Experiencing Our Natural World

Inclusive walks in nature are organized so that everyone can develop a deeper appreciation for and acquire a greater understanding of the beauty & complexity of the planet that God has placed in our care.

Worship Services

The Environmental Team organizes and delivers worship services on Earth Day Sunday and at other appropriate times (e.g. Orange Shirt Day, Harvest) of the year.

Members of the Congregation helped everyone to understand the importance of Orange Shirt Day
